Transportation

Please pay special attention to the "Evening" rehearsals. All technical staff & applicable cast and are expected to attend these rehearsals. We apologize if this creates an awkward transportation situation, but the only way for us to get students back to the middle school for these evening rehearsals is by asking that parents drive their child(ren). Consider working out carpools with other cast/tech members.

Students must return home in between after school and evening rehearsals. They can not stay at the school in-between.

Late buses are still available for the after school rehearsals.

Tickets

During this week, tickets will be for sale in the Novi Middle School main office for $7 each. Tickets will also be for sale on the night of the show, but the lines are much shorter when purchased at the office in advance.

Show Day

On Friday, May 11th, we ask that all cast and technical crew wear their show t-shirts to school. It is, among other things, part of our final advertising push.

As listed above, we will have a normal rehearsal after school this day. Here we will work on curtain call/bows and polish up and scenes that need attention.

All students will then go home as normal (late bus, car, walking, biking, etc) at 4:15PM.

We ask that students eat and drink water. They are also allowed to bring a water bottle for use during the show. We may have a small supply of bottled water available during the show as well.

Take care of any last-minute personal business before returning to the middle school at 6:00 PM. Information regarding costumes is below

Again, apologies, students / families will need to work out transportation on their own.

Show Night - Pre Show

Upon arriving at the middle school, cast members will be directed to the dressing rooms to change into costume, put on makeup, do hair, etc. We hope to have parent volunteers to help with this. Technical staff will perform last-minute equipment checks.

Before the show cast members will wait in one of the music rooms next to the auditorium. As we have two separate shows this year, some students wait in these rooms while the other show is performing. We will have an interal video stream setup so each cast can watch the others show while they wait.

Technical staff will be at their assigned positions for the entirety of the show.

Show Night - During Show

We aim to have all cast and crew ready for opening of house at 7:00 PM. Show will then begin around 7:30PM.

There will be a brief intermission between the two shows.

Show Night - Post Show

After curtain call, cast members will be taken back to the music hall. We will attempt to get them out to the cafeteria quickly for pictures in costume.

Please note that photography and videography of any form during the show is strictly prohibited due to copyright restrictions

Technical staff will also be free to greet their families in the cafeteria.

Cleanup

After the show ends we will begin cleaning up all of our equipment as quickly as possible. We ask, especially of the technical staff, if they are able to stay for at least a few minutes and aid in this effort it goes much faster. We also welcome help from actors and parent volunteers.

Leaving

Cast members must change back into their own cloths before leaving. Unless you have supplied your own costume, your costume must be returned. If you supplied your own costume you can take it home. Technical staff also please make sure you don't anciently walk off with a piece of equipment (usually radios).

Before leaving please check in with an NMSTheater staff member to make sure that you are clear to leave. This helps us keep track of all the students.

Misc Notes

Technical staff, please wear black pants / shoes to the show. Sound and lighting personel can wear show shirts during the show. Stage hands must wear full black clothng so you are not seen moving around the stage - sorry the show shirts were bright red this year.

Cast and tech, please be sure to keep up with your school work. Theater rehearsal is not a pass.

Be sure to drink plenty of water and get as much sleep as you can. (No, you still can't sleep in class). No one wants to have to drop out of the show Friday morning because they got sick.

If you have any questions, concerns, or are interested in volunteering please contact us:

["2017"] Fall Play Tryouts

Posted by Wyatt on December 18, 2017 at 6:30 PM Comments comments (0)

The middle school theater season will officially start, ideally, around 8 weeks before the date of the show. At this time, we will put out announcements through school news outlets as well as hang fliers around the building announcing tryout dates. Information packets and sign-up sheets will be available in the main office. The packet will contain rules, guidelines, lines for memorization during tryouts, as well as other details that may be pertinent at the time for this show season. We ask that the rules and guidelines sheet be signed by student and guardian and returned to our team of directors on the first day of rehearsal.

The actual tryouts will be a little different from typical theatrical tryouts. During NMSTheater tryouts, no one auditions for a specific character or role. Everyone recites the same lines - from the packet - and our team of experienced volunteers will delegate roles as they see fit. Each audition will - usually - take place on the middle school auditorium stage. Each audition will be conducted in private. The only people who see tryouts are judging volunteers and our directing staff. Students will be directed into the auditorium one at a time and they will be asked to recite the lines provided in the packet to the judges. Students are allowed to have the line packet to read from during the audition. We only require that the lines be read. Any characterization that students may want to include is encouraged, but make sure it isn't over the top. Please keep in mind we have several dozen students waiting to audition and to be respectful of their time too.

By the time students arrive at school the next day, call-backs will be posted outside the auditorium. If your tryout number is on the list, then that means we would like you to be a part of our show. If your number is not listed, then we are unfortunately not able to grant you a roll in our show. We encourage anyone who may not have been granted a spot in this season’s show to work in their own time on enhancing their theatrical abilities and come back next season.

Now the Middle School Theater season has officially begun. We will pick back up again with early and mid season rehearsals soon.

Middle School Theater 101

In an effort to provide more information to our newer prospective actors and technical staff, we will be releasing several articles in an ongoing series called "Middle School Theater 101." These articles will be focused on a typical Novi Middle School Theater season. We will cover topics from tryouts to post-show proceedings at a general level that remains consistent throughout our show seasons. We hope that these articles will help students feel more prepared and aware of what is going on throughout the theater season.

Most of these articles will be written by Wyatt Parsons, current Technical Director. Wyatt has been involved with Novi Middle School Theater since 2013 when he started as a "techie" on the student technical staff. Should you have any questsions or comments, please don't hesitate to reachout to Wyatt, or any other Middle School Theater staff member. They are reachable through the contact form, direct message, or forum post on this website; in person during rehersal; as well as public comment on these blog posts.

We hope to see you in the Theater.

2017 & 2018 School Year Shows

Posted by Wyatt on December 10, 2017 at 1:45 AM Comments comments (0)

Update [12/14]: Tryouts are scheduled for December 20th and 21st. Sign up and grab an audition packet in the middle school main office.

-------------------------------------------------

Over the years our show dates have shifted around quite a bit and this year sees further shuffling of our schedule. The "Fall" Play is slotted for Friday Febuary 16th, 2018. Tryouts are set to take place during the final week of school before winter break (18th - 22nd). Tryouts be on 2 consecutive days after school during that week. Watch for announcements within the Middle School for more specific times and dates. We will also try to send out reminders and post the information on this website once more specific information is availibe.

Aftershool rehersals will proceed in their usual format once school resumes in January. The first rehersal will probably take place on January 8th. All rehersals, unless otherwise communicated, will take place in the Novi Middle School Auditorium after school from 2:30 PM - 4:15PM. Dismissal will follow the same structure as all other after school activites. Families may pickup their children from the Middle School, students may walk, bike, or take the late bus home.

For those new to our program, actors and technical staff will be given calendars (also avalible on this website) with specific rehersal dates which they are required to attend. Especially for the first few weeks, we will not require all troupe members to attend each day. As we aproach show day the rehersal schedule will become much more regirous, culminating in "show week." There are already posts and videos on this website explaining what the week leading up to the show, in this case Febuary 12th thorugh the 16th, will look like. We will make sure to reitterate this information again to parents, guardians, and students once we are closer to that week.

As for our Srping Musical, the official date of the show is still up in the air, but will actually take place during this months of spring. Right now this will probably be sometime during mid to late April. Once the Fall Play season has ended, we will be able to provide more information about the Musical.

If you have any questions, concerns, or are interested in volunteering please contact us:
[email protected] - Lori Burkhardt - Director (Voulenteering, Cast, Misc)
[email protected] - Wyatt Parsons - Technical Director (Technical Staff)

We hope you enjoy watching and/or performing in the show.
Break a leg!
